Complex processing of technical hemp and application of isolated fractions

Hemp is a plant containing many active substances and it is widely used in industry. The most common applications are the food, pharmaceutical, textile and cosmetics industries. This diploma thesis dealt with the characterization of hemp fractions, which are created during hemp processing and their potential applications. The theoretical part was focused on the description of the plant, its chemical composition and the research of the active substances in hemp. Also, its industrial use, the technique of hemp processing and the current applications of individual fractions were summarized. In the experimental part, hemp fractions were analysed in terms of nutrient content. Hemp extracts were prepared using three solvents - hexane, 70% ethanol and distilled water, which were compared based on the extraction yield of polyphenols, flavonoids, antioxidants, chlorophylls and cannabinoids. Antimicrobial effects were analysed in hexane and ethanol extracts. By-products of hemp processing were used in some screening application in biotechnology, cosmetics and nutrition. The results show that the extract with 70% ethanol had the highest content of active substances. From the hemp fractions, hemp trichomes and Fedora flowers had the highest content of active substances. Cannabis by-products have the potential to become valuable substrates for yeast cultivation. Face scrub containing hemp flour as an abrasive component had favourable results and was acceptable to consumers, as was the prepared hemp flour raw bar, which was evaluated to be comparable to commercially available hemp protein raw bars.

This thesis eleborates about trends in poultry products. A trend in poultry farming is the enrichment of poultry feed mixtures for higher yield and meat quality. Another trend is a need to breed new heat resistant poultry breeds and slow growing breeds. Breakthroughs in innovative technologies include cold plasma, which is effective in decontaminating poultry meat, and a magnetic sensor that mimics the function of a human tooth. An imaging detection system has been developed increasing incidence of meat defects. The trend is to use enzymes and xanthan gum to create products with modified texture. Another trend is to increase the nutritional value using 3D printing. In gastronomy, the trend is to prepare poultry using the sous-vide method. In the area of waste and poultry products, the recovery of keratin from feathers or the reuse of poultry litter using various technologies are new. Plant-based alternatives to poultry meat are becoming more popular, along with their functional components and additives. Finally, consumer´s perceptions of conventional meat, “cultured meat” and plant-based alternatives were assessed.

Perspectives of flue-gas desulphurisation gypsum and rock gypsum in the Czech Republic

Flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) gypsum makes one of the so-called coal combustion by-products. FGD gypsum is the mostly used type of synthetic gypsum. In many applications, it can fully substitute natural rock gypsum (e.g. in wallboard production or as setting retarder in cement industry). Production and usage of FGD gypsum is directly connected with electricity generation based on coal combustion. In a broad scale, FGD gypsum appeared in Japan, USA, and Western Europe in 1970s-1980s, a bit later (in 1990s) also in Central Europe. During recent decades, the technology quickly spreads in Asia (China, India, etc.) as well. Ironically, the countries which used FGD gypsum technology as the first, will be probably also the first one which will cease the technology due to demise from energy generation in coal power stations. With a certain delay, similar trend is expected in the Czech Republic as well. Based on this presumption, this BSc. thesis discusses various scenarios, including possibility of long-term deposition of FGD gypsum in order to allow its usage over longer period in the future. Besides this, the thesis also strengthens the importance of natural gypsum, which will replace FGD gypsum in the future.
